American Creed, a PBS documentary film, was released in 2018.  Directed by Sam Ball, it addresses the question of what it means to be an AMERICAN.

In the film, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy address this multi-faceted subject.  We  may come from different backgrounds, like Rice and Kennedy, and have different life experiences and points of view, but hopefully we can all come together as one.

If we acknowledge that 'creed' is a set of beliefs, then 'American creed' explores our beliefs in relation to what it means to be an American.  This film addresses what holds us together in turbulent times and how we can creatively bridge cultural, economic and/or political divides.

Prior to the screening of American Creed (82 min), National Writing Project Scholars, respectively from the University of Louisville National Writing Project site and the Indiana University Southeast National Writing Project site, will take turns capturing the audience members' own ideas and examples of what it means to be an American.

After the screening, the National Writing Project Scholars will put on their moderator caps and attempt to gently guide the audience members to revise their earlier creeds and create a new definition of American Creed, one that can be agreed upon by all.
