Sewing with Patterns: Laying and Cutting Pattern Pieces. Join instructor Judy Martin to learn how to correctly select a pattern and fabric and cut pattern pieces from fabric as first steps in the construction of a garment.
Please note this is PART ONE of a TWO PART workshop on laying and cutting pattern pieces and registration is required. By registering for this class, you are expected to attend BOTH sessions. If your schedule may keep you from attending either session or you’re not serious about learning these skills, please don’t register, as space is limited. Your commitment is expected and appreciated.
For this first session, you will meet with instructor Judy Martin at JoAnn Fabric and Crafts, 1025 Veterans Parkway, Clarksville, to learn how to select a pattern and your fabric. Click here to get directions to JoAnn.
Prerequisites:
- Participants must have a general knowledge of fabric types, content, and uses, and terms used in the sewing process such as seam, top stitch, back stitch, clipping corners and curves.
- Participants must be able to demonstrate basic sewing skills, such as using a sewing machine to stitch straight and curved lines, using a measuring tape, pressing seams, and following written instructions.
During the week before this first session, you will receive an email message with more details about the class to ensure a successful learning experience.
Materials and Tools:
Participants will provide a pattern* of their choice and woven fabric as recommended in the pattern to construct the garment, scissors, measuring tape, and pins.
In this class you will learn how to:
- Correctly select the pattern size that fits your body.
- Read the instructions on the pattern back to choose proper fabric and notions.
- Select appropriate fabric and notions for your project.
- Lay out pattern pieces onto fabric for accurate cutting and preparation for sewing.
- Cut the pattern pieces.
- Mark pattern pieces for darts, slits, insertions, trim, buttons, etc.
*Pattern: For your beginning project of cutting pattern pieces, select a simple shirt or dress style with no more than 6 pattern pieces. These are examples of appropriate styles for your first project:
